How a Local Barbershop Became Part of the City’s Culture
In Episode 2 of Talkin’ St. Pete, host Ryan Bogden features Max Glazer, owner of The Shave Cave, a men’s grooming and barber shop based in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Max shares how he went from construction and e-commerce to building one of the most recognized barbershops in St. Pete, and how it naturally became the official barbershop of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. This conversation gives a real look at what it takes to build something local that people actually come back to, and why St. Pete has been the right place to grow it.
Max Glazer’s Journey from E-Commerce to The Shave Cave in St. Petersburg, Florida
Max didn’t start in barbering.
He spent years in construction and real estate before things shifted after the 2008 crash. Like a lot of people, he had to pivot and figure out what was next, which eventually brought him to St. Pete where he started an online men’s grooming business.
The barbershop came later, originally just as a way to bring the products to life. Max wanted a place where people could actually try what he was selling instead of just ordering it online.
Once the doors opened, though, it turned into something more. The focus shifted from products to the experience, and that’s what The Shave Cave is built around today.
How the Tampa Bay Rowdies Got Involved
This wasn’t some big marketing move.
Max was already a fan of the Tampa Bay Rowdies and started by supporting the team the simple way, showing up and offering free haircuts to players.
Over time, that turned into real relationships. Players kept coming in, staff followed, and eventually ownership took notice.
Now, The Shave Cave is the official barbershop of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and it all happened naturally.
Why Businesses Like The Shave Cave Grow in St. Pete
A big part of why The Shave Cave has grown the way it has comes down to where it’s built, St. Pete.
People here notice when you’re consistent and doing things the right way. Word spreads fast, especially with local businesses, and you don’t have to force connections. You just have to show up, be part of the community, and actually care about what you’re doing.
At the same time, Max is clear that none of it works without the right team. The shop can look great, but if the haircut isn’t right, people aren’t coming back. That’s why he puts so much focus on finding people who take pride in their work and fit the environment he’s built.
On top of that, staying involved locally has played a big role. Max didn’t build this in isolation, he’s connected with other business owners, local groups, and the community around him. That combination of strong people, consistency, and real connection is what’s made The Shave Cave work in St. Pete.
